Recent reports have revealed that the death toll from the asbestos related cancer mesothelioma is continuing to increase, and one New York attorney that deals with personal injury said that the figures highlight how desperate the need is for ongoing commitment to control exposure to hazardous materials at work.

The figures come from the results of a federal study, which were recently released. Joseph Belluck, who is a partner at a New York law firm that deals with asbestos cases, stated: “The tragic legacy of asbestos will be with us for many years to come. Even today, people in certain occupations continue to be exposed.”

The results of the study were released by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, and showed that between 1999 and 2005 there were over eighteen thousand deaths in the United States that resulted from malignant mesothelioma, which is linked directly to exposure to asbestos dust and fibers over long periods and at high levels.

Twenty six states across the country were identified as having mesothelioma death figures that were higher than the national average, which is 13.8 deaths per million people per year.
